Julian
Bream is widely acknowledged as one of the foremost musicians of
the twentieth century. During a concert career spanning over 60
years he almost single-handedly inspired the revival of the Renaissance
lute, raising international awareness of music of the Elizabethan
period by Dowland and Byrd and his ensembe, the Julian Bream Consort,
was key in the reawakening of interest in early music in the early
60's. He formed the cornerstone of the guitar repertoire from from
composers such as Britten, Berkeley, Arnold, Walton, H enze
and Takemitsu. This legacy wil be explored during the CDGF 2008
with strands in early music and in new music featuring repertoire
which Bream revived, commissioned and performed during his career.
Following his pioneering example, the Festival has commissioned
a new piece for sologuitar by one of Europe's most successful composers,
Ian Wilson, to be premiered by Graham Anthony Devine. Graham Wade
will launch his new book The Art of Julian Bream and will present
a seminar on Bream, the man and musician.
